Some flea market finds you just have to take home, no matter what they look like. Other times you have hardware for your cabinets on hand but you hate the color. What can you do? Here are some easy to do tips on removing old paint, painting, and antiquing your cabinet hardware in just minutes. It is so quick and easy you won’t believe you have not done it before.

1. Removing Paint –Getting paint off is often easier said than done. However there are several methods. If you are looking for a smooth, paint-less finish then you should go for a paint stripper. This is full of harsh chemicals but it does the job. It can damage some materials though. You can also sand or scrape away paint with sandpaper or wire brushes. If the hardware is metal, you can submerge it in a pot of baking soda and water. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer until the paint softens enough to be pulled or wiped off.

2. Painting – Painting your knobs and pulls is super easy. Remove the knobs from your cabinets first. All you have to do is clean it well, preferably with a degreaser to remove any oil buildup from hands and cooking, etc. Then sand down the parts you can reach. Once any loose paint or debris is sanded off wipe it clean and let it dry all the way. Then use spray paint to paint it whatever shade will work. Make sure the paint matches the material of your knobs. Plastic, metal or wood all require different paints. Go for something with a sheen to have it last a long time. They have metal colored paints like silver and bronze, stone colored and textured paints, and every color of the rainbow. Try to avoid drips and coat it at least twice. Let it dry completely before reattaching.

3. Antiquing with Paint – It is easier than it sounds. Rustoleum even has a simple kit! All you have to do is follow the directions for painting above and then add a brush on top coat of a darker shade for an antique look. You can also scrape away with sandpaper or dampen the paint slightly as it dries so it chips off for a shabby chic flair.

Consider painting your hardware the same color as your furniture. Add a bit of brown glaze over the entire piece after it is painted to antique the paint. Your hardware will look sensational in the same color.

As you can see, painting or repainting your hardware to suit your style is simple and fast. It takes just thirty minutes to change a kitchen from drab to fab. Try it out in your home and see what a difference it makes.

Illinois-based designer, Megan Winters isn't afraid to go bold. Decor can be traditional without being “old and boring, been-there-done-that,” Winters tells Chicago Home Magazine. Winters started a high-end printing firm that quickly went global exposing her to some of the world's leading luxury retailers which enabled her to transition into the interior design world with ease. Winters is known best for her fearless use of colors, high end antiques, and luxury interiors. Winters isn't the average stuffy interior designer, she adds a bit of humor in her design schemes while at the same time isn't willing to compromise her true style. Here are a couple keys to getting her designer look in your own home.

1. Great Antiques

“I don’t believe everything has to cost a gazillion dollars,” she says. “If it’s all at a certain taste level, that’s how you create a space that is beautiful and a reflection of you.”- Megan in Chicago Home Magazine.

"That's what spaces need—jeans with platforms,"she says. "Or rather comfy couches and chairs with
gilt crystal chandeliers and every accessory so the room smiles."

Invest in a few great pieces that you love and design the room around them. Less is always more. Remove the clutter and showcase that great antique that you felt you scored on. Great furniture doesn't have to cost a fortune, but you have to love it. Choose pieces that you don't mind investing some money into. A chair that possibly needs upholstering may cost you a bit in labor, but in the end you get the fabric, paint finish and overall look that is pleasing in your eyes.

2. Paint it Gold

You don't need gold everywhere to make a statement, as some of the smallest details on furniture are often not overlooked by guests. What I love about Megan, is she isn't afraid of decorating with gold. Too many people shy away from gold, because they may think it is excessive. Megan spills in one magazine interview that she loves to gild everything.

Spray painting with metallic gold paint can really transform a set of chairs, nightstands or accent accessories. If you want to make your pieces look even more expensive, consider gold leafing these items.

Forget about white cabinetry, go for color. The more dramatic the better. If you are working around a white scheme, think about cabinetry in a dramatic color and white furniture. Play around with glossy finishes, and specialty hardware. Miles Redd lacquered his cabinets in a high gloss green paint that couldn't be more sensational. If you have very basic box looking cabinetry, consider copying the campaign furniture. Bulk hardware is available off of ebay and will transform any cabinet from boring to "wow" in a weekend. The heavier the hardware the better.

4. Greek Key & Patterns

Greek Key has become a staple in Hollywood Regency interiors. You can't look through a magazine without it being represented somewhere. Greek key is so versatile that it makes it easy to incorporate other patterns into the mix. Megan's traditional home structure didn’t stop her from covering the entire entry and stairway in a bold zebra stripe wallpaper. Find a pattern you love, and jump into it!

An Extravagant Home Based Around White

Marianne Brandi and Keld Mikkelsen's refurbished home was featured in the December issue of Lonny Magazine. The home located in Hellerup, a suburb located just outside Copenhagen features a number of stunning antiques displayed in a home based around black and white. The couple heads up an international fashion label called Day Birger el Mikkelsen, so it comes at no surprise that their house is as hip as their fashion lines. The house is based around white with bold contrasting furniture.

Copy their look by incorporating a few elements that appear in their home.

1. Paint Your Tim a High Gloss.

Base your interior wall paint colors around muted whites. Layer in wainscoting and panelled walls with the trim color painted in a high gloss white, or a shade or two darker than the wall color, as seen in their bedroom. Consider adding shine in by adding a lot of expensive hardware such as what is seen in their wall arm sconce beside the bed. Add in other extravagant pieces that have texture, such as the white marble fireplace. The detail in marble is breathtaking.

2. Consider choosing furniture with detail.

The french chairs seen in their bedroom are painted in white and the trim in gold allows a person to see the incredible detail in the carving. French Chairs can be customized, and often times the upholstery is so easy that an ameture can recover the chairs with ease. Biedermeier Chairs also give a room based around white a break with it's intricate and detailed woods. Pieces of furniture that have painted trim detail will stand out against a white palette.

3. Consider adding some color in the closets.

Paint your closets in a dark navy, and dress up these small areas with storage boxes painted in the same color that also have brass hardware. Add vintage knobs to your storage containers to dress them up. Showcase those dramatic 4 inch pink stilettos against a navy background. If you have walls that are not textured, consider doing the closet up in a high gloss. Start with a base coat of the paint color in flat, and once it is try and several coats are applied to cover the walls, then continue with the gloss application. Gloss alone will not cover, which is why many painters suggest getting the coverage by a flat application.

4. Carefully Think Out Flooring

Give a lot of attention to flooring. If a home has great flooring, excessive furniture isn't necessary. Consider investing in great wood floors, marble or stone floors. 5. Choose a couple high end antiques.

In Marianne Brandi and Keld Mikkelsen's bathroom they choose to feature an expensive wood bombe chest. Consider the bathroom a room to decorate, and get rid of the builders standard choices. In a all white home, wood is essential. Consider adding in a few really raw unfinished wood pieces. If you have a piece of furniture that you have enjoyed for years, consider stripping the wood down to it's natural state. In the past I have mixed together off white paint and water for a translucent wash.

Colette van den Thillart's Dining Room is grand! She chose antique empire chairs in a white painted finish. These chairs have a lovely upholstered back. Decoupage is easy, you can do it too! Decoupage is basically gluing paper, cardboard stock, newspaper and magazine images onto a piece of furniture, or decorative item.

Some basic tools are needed. These tools are glue, glue stick, paintbrushes, sponge paintbrush to even out the glue, scissors, and the pattern you intend to glue.

1. Carefully cut out your pattern. This will be the most time consuming process. Perhaps you plan on layering a pattern, or maybe you plan on just covering a piece of furniture, but be sure to take your time with this step because your precision will show in the end.

2. Apply a small amount of white glue or modge podge decoupage to the area of the prepared surface where you want to place your cut outs. Smooth the glue out with a small foam paintbrush.

3.Place the image onto the surface and smooth out the bubbles and wrinkles with a foam brush. A mini roller can certainly help in this stage of the project.

4. After all your images are in place, apply a coats of decoupage or substitute clear polyurethane for a gloss finish. Check on your project within the hour, as air bubbles WILL surface, which you can smooth out. If air bubbles dry, simply take a pin and deflate the bubble and add additional glue.

Do a light sand in between all additional coats.

Florence was a major historical city, distinguished as one of the most outstanding artistic centres in the peninsula from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

Florence was founded in 59 (BCE) as a settlement for former soldiers, being named 'Florentia', allotted by Julius Caesar. House Beautiful is a very stylish home decor magazine, so it is not a shock to see such a captivating house appear in the May issue of House Beautiful. The house belongs to Annie Brahler whom is an obvious collector of fine French furniture. She shares a love like most of us for French furnishings, and it is so exciting to see what another collector has done with her home.

For all of you who want to decorate around white, this home will certainly inspire you.

Here is ten tips I can share that I see that she did with her home to make a high impact rich appearance.

1. The first thing that she did was she obviously collected furniture that she liked. In each of her rooms, I can see she loves Louis XVI styled furniture. A rich piece of furniture is NOT over looked. In her living room, you can see she choice Louis XVI tables for her end tables. Both have rich patina. Consider collecting only furniture that you adore, and design around those pieces.

2. You can see in one of the photos that Annie Brahler loves gilt wood mirrors. She didn't paint them white, ..... are you shocked? It seems as though many white based interiors also paint the mirrors. I am so glad she didn't. I honestly love the richness of gold, and these old world mirrors have incredible patina that are built over time. Trust me, I have painted over one Federal eagle mirror that I wished I never had touched. I ruined it!

3.Collecting is best done where you can display your collections together. Use wall sconces, use one big giant display cabinet, but keep them in one place. People are inspired by stories. They like to hear what you were eating when you bought the little tortoise shell trinket box. If you have too much, consider layering your collections. You can see she features two mirrors that are like one another together above a fireplace. Placing items in groups of three give you bigger impact than displaying them by themselves.

2. Closets contain lots of color, so consider basing your paint choices around white, gray black or beige. I have seen decor pictures that feature closets in red and purple, but if you notice, the closets are also cherry picked for the photography to capture the best image possible. You never see the closet looking as it were on a daily basis, so choose a color that would work with all your wardrobe colors.

Bright white does look rather nice, and with closets bright white always makes things appear bigger. Black is another choice, and one I have used in the past in many of my homes. Black can make your closets look very luxurious, but dark. Choose a color that you love, and if you do have a walk in closet, consider featuring a tall chest with a mirror to dress up the space. Shoe and accessory display will always make your closets appear more designer, so consider that into your plans and also factor in A LOT of storage for those bulky sweaters that never seem to look good on the hanger.

3. Gold is still rich today when paired with muted tones such as gray and beige. Gold is also the perfect accessory for bold colors such as Kelly green, and lemon. Gold is the perfect accessory in any interior. Don't underestimate the power of gold leafing. Gold leafing can really bring an accessory to appear like real metal. Spray paint doesn't even compare.

4. Look at the pictures of the incredible demi lune sideboard that is used as a island in the kitchen. Also in her closet, the island appears to be several dressers or french antique or vintage pieces pushed together. I would have to say this has to be one of the most inspiring aspect of the pictures of her home. Don't spend thousands on an island that you aren't excited about. Obviously she is a collector of French furniture, and having a demilune as an island is certainly something you never see. Don't be afraid of taking an exceptional piece of furniture and hiring a carpenter to build on to the piece for the room you wish to display it in. Many people take vintage french chests and dressers and turn them into sinks for their bathroom. Why not work with existing built furniture and transform it? If you are able to score big on an antique piece, why not work with it? If you find a fabulous vintage piece, work with it.... AND ON to my next point.

5. Marble makes everything richer. If you are considering a transformation on your home, and wish to work with white, consider spending the money in your counter tops. In one of the apartments we lived in, we made the mistake of exchanging out the cabinetry in exchange for Ikea "do it yourself" cabinetry. Although we didn't own the apartment, it taught my husband and I a good lesson. - Never ever rent out a home that you own! I have messed up so many apartments with plaster! - Detailed work is never overlooked. Our apartment turned to be a mess because we aren't professionals when it comes to wood working! If we did own the building, marble counter tops would have made the kitchen so much more elegant, while a good layer of white paint was all that was needed. Sometimes cabinets are still fashionable. After looking at the options in many stores such as IKEA, you don't get quality. Today you can hardly SOLID wood cabinets. AND, when you do, they cost a ton of money. Invest in marble counter tops for the bathroom and living room, and consider re-working the original cabinets. Switch out the doors. Removing the original cabinets can cost you dearly.

6. Great seating can make all the difference in a room. While you are shopping around you will always find furniture that you can paint, or mirrors that you can gold leaf, but good upholstered furniture is hard to find. Amazon has a number of inexpensive pieces that really give you a lot of bang for your buck. Consider investing in a exceptional couch that you can base your living room around. Consider keeping your eye out for a great looking bed. BIG pieces make an impact, so invest in great looking pieces that will end up taking up a lot of room. When you do bring it together, pair down your belongings. Keep things very organized so that you can appreciate your better items than the endless junk that everyone owns in their house. Invest in storage and make the most use out of your closets.
